Virus Problem Fixed

Blog Code

I couldn't handle it, I reformatted and then reinstalled windows... Luckily I was able to get into safe mod on my previous install of XP and transfer my music, photos, school work, and other important files over... Now I Just need good virus software to scan it. Just as preliminary protection (when in doubt pull out), I downloaded ad-aware and AVG Anti-Virus, both from download.com and did scans on my hard drive.

Any one have suggestions on the best anti-virus software?

Oh and to christen the new computer the first game to be installed is Diablo 2: LoD :)

AVG is one of the best. It's my personal favourite.

Other than that, grab Spybot Search and Destroy, which is always a good one to have to hand.

Personally, I prefer Spybot over ad-aware, but they're both good at what they do. Suppose it comes down to what you like more interface wise.

Have you used AVG v8? I can't stand AVG anymore.

        I use it :B

I'm actually a big fan of 8, because of the improvements in the scanning and all the other stuff in the Internet Security package (Yes, I pay for it). It's noticably more subtle than 7.5, in my book.

8 was a lot less subtle for me. I've been having Internet issues (which I think I finally managed to fix last night) so I wouldn't always connect to the Internet as soon as I booted and AVG would freak out if it couldn't connect to the update server and leave this giant red exclamation point in my system tray (what if I'm somewhere that doesn't have Internet? or I don't need the Internet so I'm not connected?). To finally get it to update, I'd have to tell it to update manually. Then there's that Firefox extension that I had no idea would be installed, which I couldn't uninstall. I have my extensions because I use them, so if I don't need an extension I uninstall it rather than just disable it (don't see a reason to keep what I don't need).

Crazy. Mine only lets me know when it starts a scan and when it finishes a scan. Other than that, it only pops things up when I unplug my network connection, and even then it's just to say that the internet connection is no longer active, and the firewall has changed to stand alone mode.

Iunno what you mean by firefox addon. Unless you mean LinkScanner or Web Shield? Which can both be disabled via the command center :B

If you are willing to fork out any money I'd say ESET Smart Security, it isn't resource intensive like the big ones like Symantec's AV's and it isn't intrusive like AVG (With AVG you always get this big popup telling you it's updating, who gives a fu-k? If everything is okay I don't want to know!) I'm currently using the trial and it's really good and lightweight and doesn't bother me at all. Problem is it's not cheap for a license, which is a shame. Therefore I guess AVG is the best one around, sigh, I could never go back to AVG...I'm going to have to fork out for ESET sometime :(

Yeah so you wouldn't suggest Norton or Mcafee antivirus?

Oh goodness no, as good as a lot of people make them out to be I find their programs to be rather bulky and slow, then again I've had bad experiences with Norton, my last Windows PC (before this) went down in a flurry of viruses sadly enough. It's a long story so I won't tell. Let's just say it wasn't brilliant. If you're going to pay any money at all put it towrads ESET. Here's the wiki on Nod32: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NOD32 Norton on the other hand: http://en.wikipedia.org/w…rton_AntiVirus#Criticisms yes there may be a few biases, but you get the general idea eh? :)

Good job getting it fixed! Viruses suck, I know. Somehow I got rid of a trojan with only freeware software ... then again, for all I know, its still floatin around ...

I use Ad-Aware and AVG. I had SpyBot for a while, but it didn't do me much good. What my computer is telling me tho is that the free AVG is gonna stop working come the 25th ... I dunno, I need to do more research.

I can't wait to get a Mac so I don't have to deal with this bull.

I was using AVG until version 8. I was really annoyed with the Firefox extension version 8 installs, which you can't uninstall (only disable). And its inability to properly update; if I wasn't connected to the Internet before it tried to update, it would fail and just sit there whining about it until I was connected to the Internet and told it to try to update again.

So I'm using avast! now. It updates in the background (it pops up a little window out of the system tray, but that's it) and doesn't have issues updating if I'm not yet connected to the Internet (it just tries again later). And it doesn't install a bloody Firefox extension that I have no use for.
